A number of shops belonging to the Asians were reportedly vandalised in the town of Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, on Tuesday. More than 22 people have been killed, hundreds injured and about 5 000 people have been left destitute since violence first erupted in the township of Alexandria, near Johannesburg on May 11.

Expressing shock at the wave of xenophobic attacks on foreigners that have killed 15 people in the country, South African President Thabo Mbeki on Monday ordered law enforcement agencies to act firmly against perpetrators. Fifteen people are now known to have been killed since the attacks started in the Alexandra township last week, against foreign nationals, especially against those from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Somalia.
